About Charterhouse School

Charterhouse School is a fully accredited and fully equipped school for youth ages 11 to 17 who are in our Residential Treatment Program and our Therapeutic Day Program. Charterhouse School offers a broad curriculum of middle- and high-school courses in a 5:1 student-to-staff ratio environment. The school’s program also offers extracurricular activities and special courses in which students can explore creative and therapeutic expression.

Charterhouse School’s innovative program has been successful in educating students who have difficulty in a standard school setting due to emotional, social, and behavioral difficulties. The school’s curriculum and teaching goals conform to the Virginia Standards of Learning and are designed to prepare students for future educational and employment objectives. The Residential Program school operates year-round. The Therapeutic Day Program operates on a nine and one half month schedule.

We Use a Strengths-Based Approach

While youth come to us with specific academic, behavioral, social, and emotional needs to be addressed through individualized education, all youth have universal developmental needs. Our program centers on the four developmental needs of the Circle of Courage™: Belonging, Independence, Mastery, and Generosity.
