On June 6, students at Charterhouse School will be hosting an event to raise funds to build a secondary school in Aweil, Sudan. This project was initiated by the students who attended Career Day on April 25, 2012. Guest speaker, William Bol Gai Deng spoke to the students about his life in Aweil, a small village in the Sudan. William’s account of survival during a civil war and slavery captured the attention of our students. Despite the hardships William faced, he courageously began a new life in America. Now a VCU graduate and founder of the Southern Sudan Project, his dream is to empower the youth of America and use education as the foundation for rebuilding the community in his hometown of Aweil, Sudan.
CHS students will be washing cars, selling baked goods* and plants* at this event. Donations will also be accepted.
The total funds raised at this event will be presented to Mr. Deng when he returns to speak at our CHS graduation ceremony on June 18. If you would like to volunteer, supply materials or support please let Elyse Waugh know!
