People

The staff at Charterhouse School are trained professionals who work together as a team to provide students and their families with coordinated services. The team consists of the following:

  • Teacher who provides each student with an appropriate education on his or her grade level, including all special education services.
  • Behavior Specialist who assists in the classroom and coordinates activities, such as PE, life skills, field trips, and service learning.
  • Therapist who facilitates individual therapy and psychoeducational groups for the students and family groups for parents.
  • Day Program Coordinator who is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the school.
  • Principal who oversees the overall functions of the school.


Erik K. Laursen  |  Vice President, Learning and Program Development

Erik K. Laursen, Ph.D. is actively involved in UMFS’ outcomes management and training and learning opportunities. He has served in a variety of positions at UMFS and Charterhouse School since 1986.


Brendan A. Folmar  |  Principal, Charterhouse School
Brendan Folmar, Principal of Charterhouse School, has 18 years of experience in residential and private educational programs. Brendan received his undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from California University of Pennsylvania and his Masters from Virginia State University in Education Administration and Supervision. Brendan is also endorsed in the special education areas of emotional disturbance, learning disabilities and mental retardation. Brendan oversees both Charterhouse Day School and Charterhouse School Residential Programs. His passion is developing teams and programs to serve troubled youth.

Tonya Salley-Goodwin  |   Coordinator, Therapeutic Day Treatment Program

Tonya Salley-Goodwin joined UMFS in 1998 as a Youth Counselor and Relief Youth Counselor in our Residential Program. In October 2007, Tonya was hired as the Coordinator for Charterhouse Therapeutic Day Program. Tonya started her career as a special education teacher in a local residential facility for children. She was also Head of Academy for several specialized schools in the Richmond and Middle Peninsula areas. Tonya has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History/Political Science. She attended Old Dominion University where she obtained certification in the area of emotional disturbance and holds a Virginia teaching license in special education. She is currently working towards endorsement in the area of Education Administration and Supervision.
